australia day getaway

I prepared this post before the weather turned sour and that wannabe cyclone rolled in, thereby putting a dampener on our weekend away at the coast. How rude.

Moving on to Plan B: I’ve loaded up the iPad with books and magazines, checked the movie listings and penciled in a pamper session.

In the event that the weather miraculously turns around, here’s what you should throw in the boot before heading to the beach.

Happy Australia Day!

jetset: survival kit

Wouldn’t it be nice to turn left when you board a plane and venture behind that mysterious curtain? I imagine it to be a wonderland of champagne, pedicures and king size heavenly mattresses. No?

Even if I had the coin to upgrade in class, I guess I’d much rather spend it at my destination.  After all, a sky-bed lasts twelve hours, but Celine handbags are forever.

Cattle class needn’t be a complete depravity. A little preparation is all it takes to inject some comfort into your experience.

This is what you’ll find in my carry on.

postcards from hawaii

The Mr and I are back from our little getaway. Two weeks of sun, sand and surf was exactly what we needed.  It was pure heaven, and definitely not long enough. But is it ever?!

I’ve written a detailed guide to Waikiki here, but below are some new gems I scouted to ensure you get maximum aloha for your dollar.

Getting Around

On previous visits, we’ve relied upon the public transport system, and only hired a car for a day or two to explore the island.  On this trip, we decided to hire a car for the entire duration . Best idea ever. It’s surprisingly affordable (I’ve done the cost/benefit analysis) when you factor in money spent on airport transfers, daily bus rides and taxis.

Supplies

Avoid tourist prices at the ABC Stores and head to Foodland for groceries and alcohol. Ask for a Maikai card.  You’ll earn points for every dollar that you spend, but more importantly the card allows you to access the discounted Maikai prices on almost every item in store.  To give you an idea of the quantum of savings, our bill totalled $220 after savings of $120!

If organic is your thing, visit the Wholefoods at Kahala Mall.  It’s not cheap, but the quality is top-notch.

Eat/Drink

If you only do one thing in Waikiki, make it sunset drinks at House without a Key at the Halekulani Hotel.  The beachfront locale, impeccable service, Hawaiian band and hula dancing are worth double what they sting you for the cocktails.

Breakfast aficionados will delight in the gargantuan portions and Eggs n Things.  My omelette arrived with a side serving of pancakes! Get there early (before 7am) and be prepared to wait in line.

The sushi at Nobu was so good, we went there twice. I can vouch for both the lounge/bar and the restaurant.  Don’t miss the signature yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno, and the rock shrimp tempura with spicy creamy sauce. Sweet.

Who would have thought that you could find authentic Italian in Waikiki? That is absolutely the case at Arancino. We shared the antipasti salad sampler and then devoured the pepperoni pizza and spaghetti con polpette. It was a total carbfest.  Reservations are only taken for bookings between 5-6pm, otherwise you’ll have to line up on the pavement with the masses.

Mr Flashman maintains that there is no better deal than happy hour (2-5.30pm weekdays) at Yard House.  He is faithful to their wings and sliders, but this trip had an affair to remember with the chicken lettuce wraps and the moo shoo egg rolls.

See/Do

Just 5 miles from downtown Honolulu lies the spectacular Nuuanu Pali Lookout. The scenic drive to get there takes you through a dense rainforest. It’s worlds away from frantic Waikiki. Simply get on the Pali Highway and look for the Scenic Drive exit on the right.

Want a stretch of paradise all to yourself? Venture off the grid on the western coast of Oahu. Take Farrington Highway and keep going until you run out of road. This is Yokohama Bay.

Kailua Bay might just be the prettiest beach on Oahu. Located on the windward coast and popular with paddleboarders and kayakers, it’s an easy 30 minute drive from Waikiki. Get paddling and head for the Mokulua islands.  Pack a picnic lunch and partake in a little bird watching.

The North Shore might be famous for the big winter waves at Sunset Beach and Banzai Pipeline, but my money is on Waimea Bay Beach Park. After soaking up the sun, wander over to nearby Waimea Valley and explore the botanical gardens. You might be lucky to witness professional cliff diving at Waimea Falls.

Ah, the memories. I’ll be living off the vapours until next time.  Mr Flashman promised me there’d be a next time!

super spinners

image via

In an alternate universe, I travel with a collection of Louis Vuitton steamer trunks wearing an enormous hat and opera gloves (circa Kate Winslet in Titantic).  Regrettably, my suitcase reality is a two-wheel, self-haul affair.

You may have seen me doing the luggage foxtrot (kick, tilt, step together, repeat) in the snake line at the airport.  For our last trip, I upgraded to the four wheel spinner style, and it made my travel experience infinitely more tolerable.

One fingertip is all you need for 360 degree manoeuvrability. You’ll be Argentinean waltzing your way around the terminal with ease.

If you are a frequent traveller, or even the occasional one in pursuit of new luggage, I strongly recommend you get onboard the spinner express.

Brand

Buy the best you can afford. My research led me to Samsonite.

Weight

The lighter the better. International Traveller reputedly produce the world’s lightest.

Dimensions

Check with your airline, but the rule of thumb for international travel is that the combined dimensions may not exceed 115cm for carry on, and 140cm for checked luggage.

Colour

I vote for black. All black. Add a couture luggage tag if you must make it easily identifiable.

Soft or Hard Sided?

It depends on your destination, and how often your bags will be handled by carriers. If you are going on a rugged safari, a hard sided case will protect your valuables. Otherwise, a soft sided bag will suffice.

Wheels

Plastic is not fantastic. You want strong steel wheels.

Warranty

12 months is good, 2 years is better.

Where to buy?

I snagged a bargain on a set of Samsonites at luggage direct. They were half the price advertised at a major department store.  They also stock a great range of accessories including tags, scales and compression bags.

# Travel Tip – Airline baggage fees and restrictions can hamper your shopping endeavours.  Don’t underestimate the capacity of your carry on spinner suitcase. I have successfully transported 15 pairs of shoes home in mine.

destination: cancun

Overseas travel can be exhausting (cue the violins). Vacation time is precious, so you want to soak up as much as possible in the time you have away. Often times you come home overstimulated and frazzled (aka the holiday hangover).

Here’s an idea. End your mainland USA adventure with 5 nights of R&R in Cancun. Lay like a lizard in the sun, sip cocktails and reminisce about the fabulous holiday you’ve had.

Let me entice you with the view from our balcony at the Royal in Cancun.

the resort

The Royal in Cancun is an adults only all-inclusive resort.  It boasts 8 restaurants, 7 bars and 24 hour room service. There’s a spa, a fully equipped gym, multiple pools and a pristine beach on your doorstep.

Margaritas at 9am on the beach? Totally acceptable. Frozen grapes by the pool? That’d be lovely thank you.

The only time you need to put your hand in your wallet is to tip the staff.  Everything, I mean everything, is included.

You could take a tour of the Mayan Ruins, play golf or swim with dolphins, but honestly, why would you leave the resort?

the catch?

As is the case for most resorts in the Hotel Zone, there is a timeshare situation going on.  After reading plenty of reviews on tripadvisor, we knew what to be aware of and dodged the sales pitch.

the cost

Our stay was ridiculously indulgent, utterly relaxing…and more affordable than you might think!

I snagged a great deal on expedia at $350 per night for the Royal Junior Oceanfront Suite. That’s the per room rate, not the per person rate.  Seriously. I couldn’t believe it either.

Getting there

It’s a 5hr direct flight from Los Angeles to Cancun. We paid $129pp each way with Virgin America.

The airport can be intimidating, so I strongly recommend you arrange transfers in advance. We booked a private shuttle with Best Day.

Insider’s Tip – Don’t miss the Chef’s Plate private degustation dinner, the teppanyaki at Asiana and the Tapas at Pintxos.

Off you go now and fill in an annual leave application. Do it!
